To speak of Clos Mogador is to speak of a living legend that reshaped the winemaking history of the DOQ Priorat. Crafted by the visionary mind of René Barbier in Gratallops, this wine holds the honor of being the very first to be officially classified as a single-estate wine (Vi de Finca) in Catalonia. Born from a breathtaking natural amphitheater of old vines rooted in pure llicorella (slate) soils, its blend embodies the classic soul of the region, featuring Grenache and Carignan as its backbone, enhanced with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. A monumental masterpiece of biodynamic agriculture designed to gracefully defy time.
In the glass, it commands attention with a dense, almost mystical presence, showing a dark, intense ruby-red color with highly concentrated garnet highlights on the rim. The nose is a fascinating geological journey that unfolds in rich layers; it opens with exuberant, liqueur-like dark fruit aromas, such as wild blackberries and ripe plums, which quickly pave the way for the true soul of Priorat: an imposing minerality of flintstone and warm slate. As it breathes, the bouquet expands with complex nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, dried wild herbs, roasted coffee beans, and a sublime smoky trail of noble wood. On the palate, it is an architectural masterpiece of tannic structure; the entry is immensely powerful, concentrated, and voluminous, yet it glides with extraordinary seduction and finesse thanks to perfectly polished, velvety tannins. A vibrant, electric acidity cuts through the richness, ensuring impeccable freshness and guiding the wine toward an eternal finish marked by balsamic echoes, dark berry jam, and an unforgettable saline, mineral aftertaste.
A pairing deeply rooted in the land. The tannic weight and monumental architecture of Clos Mogador merge effortlessly with the tender, noble fat of the lamb, while the rosemary and thyme crust highlights the wine's forest-floor aromas.
The profound depth of wild game requires a wine of this stature. Balsamic and noble oak elements wrap around the marinated meat, while the dark chocolate accent in the sauce builds a grand aromatic bridge with the oak aging notes.
Contemporary haute gastronomie. The silky texture of the beef tenderloin mirrors the wine's velvety mouthfeel, where the intense character of black truffle spectacularly coaxes out the pure and deep mineral essence of the slate terroir.
