The wine journey: Innovation, altitude, and varietal purity from the historic heart of Rioja Alta and the landscapes of Rueda.

Ramón Bilbao Winery: Tradition and a Wandering Non-Conformism

Founded in 1924 in Haro, the wine capital of La Rioja Alta, the Ramón Bilbao winery represents an endless journey driven by curiosity and non-conformism. Its philosophy is built on never stopping, exploring new viticultural boundaries and reinterpreting traditional landscapes to offer wines with a distinct contemporary identity.

With vineyards situated on the highest and coolest slopes, the winery obsessively pursues freshness and fruity balance, strictly avoiding over-ripeness and the excessive use of oak. Its expansion into the DO Rueda consolidated its excellence in crafting varietal white wines, making the brand a global emblem sought after by lovers of clean elegance and technical consistency.

High-Altitude Viticulture and Freshness

In response to climate change, Ramón Bilbao has firmly committed to seeking altitude in extreme cultivation areas. Its vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria and elevated areas benefit from a remarkable day-and-night temperature fluctuation, ensuring a vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a slow ripening process that preserves varietal purity.

Soil Diversity and Landscape

The complexity of their wines originates from precise parceling and meticulous soil research. From the clay-limestone and alluvial soils of Rioja Alta, perfectly suited for Tempranillo, to the stony pebble terraces of the Las Amedias estate in Rueda, the soil serves as the essential foundation where the character of each variety is sculpted.

Respectful Aging and Innovation

Under technical direction, the winery has redefined the use of aging barrels. By using selected French and American oak with light or medium toast profiles, the goal is to enhance the wine without overpowering the fruit. The use of concrete tanks and wooden vats complements an aging process that emphasizes fluidity and refinement.

Grape Varieties and Origins

The estate stands out for its absolute mastery of the two main varieties from their respective regions of origin, interpreting them through old vines and singular plots:

Reds from La Rioja

Red wines combine longevity and contemporary freshness, rooted in true Riojan character:

Tempranillo The structural spine. It contributes elegant notes of tart red fruit, licorice, and excellent aging potential.
Garnacha Tinta and Graciano Complementary varieties used to bring freshness, structural nerve, aromatic elegance, and complexity to the final blends.

Whites from Rueda

Wines with a highly aromatic profile, rich mid-palate volume, and a pristine varietal expression:

Verdejo The essence of Rueda. It provides notes of fennel, citrus, tropical fruits, and the signature elegant bitter finish.
Sauvignon Blanc A perfectly adapted variety that enriches the range with intense floral nuances and a crystalline structural crispness.

Icons and Unique Terroirs

Beyond its extensive and pristine classics, Ramón Bilbao crafts limited editions and single-estate estate wines born from vineyard parcels with exceptional geological and microclimatic characteristics.

High Expression

White Wine Range

The Style: Defined by absolute aromatic clarity. In Rueda they offer nuances of fennel and citrus fruits with a smooth, lingering mouthfeel. In Rioja Alta, their white blends gain structural volume and complex floral notes.

Tasting Recommendation

Varietal Freshness: Serve at around 9ºC to maximize its bright citrus profile. Pairs beautifully with seafood rice dishes, steamed shellfish, and mildly spiced Asian cuisine.

Red Wine Range

The Style: Elegant, silky, and balanced. They stand out for a crisp acidity that lifts the ripe fruit against polished, noble oak, offering subtle notes of cocoa, vanilla, and black licorice.

Tasting Recommendation

Classic Evolution: Enjoy the Reserva collection at 16ºC after a brief decanting to unearth its tertiary aromatic layers. Ideal alongside grilled red meats and cured Iberian charcuterie.
