The 992 Finca Río Negro red wine owes its name to the exact altitude in meters above sea level where its vineyards sit in Cogolludo, one of the highest and most singular wine landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula. This high-altitude wine stands as the winery's youngest, freshest, and most vibrant expression, proudly holding the premium DOP Vino de Pago status. Predominantly crafted from Tempranillo and beautifully completed with Syrah and Merlot, it undergoes a short seven-month aging process in French and American oak barrels. The result is an accessible, fluid, and high-energy red wine, masterfully designed to showcase the ultimate fruit-forward and immediate side of a wild, captivating terroir.
In the glass, it displays a lovely medium-high cherry red color, exceptionally clean and brilliant, enhanced by vibrant violet highlights along the rim that confidently announce its youth and freshness. The nose offers an immediate explosion of crisp red fruit, leading with notes of raspberries, ripe cherries, and wild blackberries, beautifully accompanied by a delicate floral perfume of violets. As it opens up, its short stay in oak adds a subtle layer of complexity without masking the fruit, revealing memories of red licorice, hints of vanilla, and a clean mineral, balsamic backdrop distinctive of its mountain environment. On the palate, it stands out for its luscious, fresh, and sumptuously fruit-driven entry. The mouthfeel is incredibly fluid, agile, and velvety, supported by very polished and friendly tannins. The crisp acidity, driven by the extreme vineyard altitude, brings a refreshing verticality that invites another sip while seamlessly balancing the overall fruit weight. The finish is medium-to-long, intensely fruity, and leaves a clean, balsamic aftertaste that rewards the palate with a wonderful sensation of lightness and vivacity.
The lean texture of white meats and the subtle spiced sweetness of the sauce find a fantastic ally in the 992. Its crisp fruit and soft tannins embrace the dish without overpowering the meat's delicateness, while the vibrant acidity cleanses the rich chocolate element.
An unexpected and rewarding oily fish pairing. The rich textures of flame-grilled salmon require a red wine with the lively mountain acidity of the 992 to stay fully balanced. Furthermore, the savory cherry glaze connects beautifully with the wine's red berry profile.
While heavy aged reds can fully saturate these intensely creamy and aromatic cheeses, the smooth fluidity and bright fruitiness of the 992 cut through the rich paste without fighting its unique profile, keeping the palate perfectly clean.
