Santbru Negre is a flagship icon from Portal del Montsant winery and a benchmark red wine within DO Montsant. It originates from a meticulous selection of old vines, combining the natural concentration of Red Grenache and the structural backbone of Samsó (Carignan) with a touch of Syrah. Aged for approximately 16 months in French oak barrels, Santbru showcases the depth, mineral terroir, and majesty of old-vine Montsant winemaking.
In the glass, it reveals an intense dark cherry-red color with deep garnet edges and high opacity. The nose presents a fascinating complexity that unfolds in layers: intense dark fruit notes of plum preserves and wild blackberries emerge first, followed by graphite, earthy minerals, dark cocoa, roasted coffee beans, black pepper, and a Mediterranean herbal backdrop of rosemary and bay leaf. On the palate, it is majestic and full-bodied; entering with fleshy weight before revealing an expansive, structured, and velvety body supported by noble, polished tannins. The finish is remarkably long, elegant, and filled with enduring mineral and spicy nuances.
Deep pairing match. The structural power and oak aging of old-vine red wine embrace rich braised beef and dark cocoa notes seamlessly.
Terroir synergy. Earthy mineral notes from old Carignan and Grenache vines elevate autumn mushroom richness and crispy rice textures.
Noble contrast. The wine's volume and balanced acidity cut through aged cheese richness, leaving a clean, elegant finish.
