Ekam white wine by Castell d'Encús is a sublime and masterful expression of the Riesling variety crafted under extreme high-altitude viticulture in the Lleida Pyrenees, masterminded by winemaker Raül Bobet under DO Costers del Segre. Cultivated at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, this cult white includes a small percentage of Albariño and stands out due to a fascinating hallmark: in specific vintages, a portion of the grapes develops noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), yielding a rich aromatic spectrum and unparalleled texture without taking away a single bit of its dry and electric nature. Fermented in stainless steel vats at very low temperatures, this wine rises as a monument to purity, verticality, and long-term cellaring potential. Ekam is a transcendent white, with an almost mystical refinement, perfect for passionate collectors and for shifting any simple home recipe into an unforgettable dining experience.
Tasting Note
In the glass, it shines with marvelous crystalline clarity, displaying a bright pale yellow color highlighted by clean greenish hints that proclaim its alpine crispness. On the nose, it is captivatingly fine and ever-changing, opening with clean traces of white fruit and fresh citrus such as green apple, lime, and grapefruit, which rapidly evolve into spring white flowers, rose petals, and a fascinating complexity rich in acacia honey, beeswax, and an elegant petrol mineral background highly typical of noble aged Riesling. On the palate, the entry is sharp, electric, and full of light. Its path across the mouth features breathtaking verticality, combining a crisp, razor-sharp acidity alongside a delightful glyceric, velvety volume brought by the botrytized grapes that wraps the whole palate. The finish is remarkably persistent, clean, and vibrant, leaving a mineral and citrusy aftertaste of supreme purity that calls to mind the high mountain peaks.
