Abadal Picapoll is far more than just a regular white wine; it is the ultimate symbol of the winemaking resurrection in DO Pla de Bages. The Abadal estate was the absolute pioneer in rescuing and championing the Picapoll grape—the region's only native white variety, which had neared complete extinction. Grown on slopes blessed by an inland Mediterranean climate and protected by the majestic Montserrat mountains, this unique grape is loved for its late-ripening skin packed with subtle nuances. Through careful vinification in stainless steel tanks resting over its fine lees, Abadal extracts the absolute typicity of the plant, bringing forth a white wine of unmistakable character, far detached from temporary trends and deeply tied to its homeland.
In the glass, this white wine shines with a bright straw-yellow color with delicate greenish and golden reflections that showcase its youth and optimal evolution. As it nears the nose, a captivating, delicate, and clean fragrance unfolds, dominated by ripe white fruit notes like pear and crisp apple, beautifully integrated with vibrant citrus layers of grapefruit and fresh pineapple. However, its true uniqueness lies in its balsamic bouquet—recalling local undergrowth, white flowers, lavender, and wild fennel, vivid markers of the deep forests surrounding the estate vines. On the palate, Abadal Picapoll surprises from the very first second. The entry is smooth, charming, and crisp, transitioning into a velvety texture with outstanding volume thanks to its lees contact. It exhibits a phenomenal balance where a seamless acidity adds great vivacity, leading the tasting experience into a broad, clean, slightly fruity finish layered with a beautiful hint of aromatic herbs that beautifully lingers over time.
The magnificent blend of balsamic crispness and the velvety volume provided by the Picapoll grape makes this wine an excellent culinary joker card, capable of mastering bold pairings:
Artisan Goat Cheeses & Soft Rind Cheeses: Instead of predictable heavy oaked white wines, pair this bottle with a traditional artisan Garrotxa goat cheese or a soft, washed-rind cheese like Tou dels Til·lers. The sharp citrus acidity of the Picapoll cuts through the creamy fat flawlessly, while its lavender and fennel accents gracefully mirror the herbal goats' milk profile.
Mediterranean Gastro-Fusion & Surf and Turf Rice Dishes: It is the perfect companion for a creamy estate rice cooked with cuttlefish, pork ribs, and artichokes, or a traditional noodle pan finished with prawns and wild forest mushrooms. The wine's structural mouthfeel beautifully supports the richness of the meat and the seafood’s intensity, while its crisp profile refreshes the palate after every bite.
