DOQ PRIORAT
Red Wines from DOQ Priorat
The red wines of the Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin enjoy outstanding international acclaim thanks to their strength, elegance, and unmistakable terroir. Born in a rugged landscape of costers (steep slopes) and terraces, where the roots of old vines crack looking for water through llicorella (slate) soils, these reds are synonymous with concentration and depth. They are highly structured wines with a mature tannic profile, well-balanced power, and an aromatic complexity driven by dark ripe fruit, mineral traces, and smoky notes.

Blends and Varieties
The red soul of the region is defined by the masterful behaviour of its two historical backbone grape varieties:
- Garnatxa Tinta (Red Grenache): Delivers structural warmth, ripe red and dark forest fruit, a velvety texture, and a remarkably round, sensual mouthfeel.
- Cariñena (Carignan): Responsible for providing the core skeleton, a firm acidity that guarantees long cellaring potential, deep color intensity, and a sharp slate-like mineral character.
- Supporting varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, or Merlot are often introduced in low percentages to round out modern aged coupages.
Pairings with Character
The massive structure, body, and intensity of these aged red wines demand dishes with an equivalent gustatory weight:
- Red meats and game: Outstanding with grilled beef ribeye stews, wild boar, venison, civets, or oven-roasted red meats seasoned with wild herbs.
- Traditional dishes: Perfectly matches slow-roasted lamb, pork trotters stewed with wild mushrooms, or tender beef cuts cooked at low temperatures.
- Intense cheeses and dark chocolate: Pairs sublimely with robust blue cheeses, extra-aged sheep cheeses, and premium high-percentage dark chocolate bars.
