Last December 2025, the Catalan wine scene experienced a historic moment: Singular Negre from the Collbaix winery became the new Vi de Finca Qualificada of the DO Pla de Bages, achieving the highest distinction a wine can obtain in Catalonia.
Following this great success, we have received many enthusiastic customers asking us for this gem from the DO Pla de Bages. However, many of them confessed they weren’t entirely sure what this distinction actually means, what requirements it entails, and, above all, how it differs from a nationwide Vino de Pago. In this regard, we open the doors of our blog to answer all questions and understand the true value of these unique bottles.
The Concept: What is a Vi de Finca?
A Vi de Finca is the highest and most prestigious official qualification a wine can achieve in Catalonia. It is not an award or a score from the many diverse wine guides; it is a distinction regulated by law (granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya at the proposal of INCAVI, the official regulating body for wine in Catalonia) that rewards absolute excellence and the indestructible bond between a wine and its terroir.
But not just any wine can be a Vi de Finca; to enjoy this privilege, almost heroic conditions must be met:
The origin: unique and delimited
The grapes must come exclusively from old or selected vineyards that form a specific terroir unit (a concrete plot or estate), with a proper name that is historically linked to the highest quality.
The location: winery at the foot of the vineyard
Vinification must be carried out in situ. The winery must be located within the same estate, ensuring that the grapes are harvested and processed immediately without undergoing transport that could lower their quality.
The quantity: very low yields
A Vi de Finca must therefore have a production per hectare far below the rest of the wines in the same DO. Concentration and quality are sought instead of volume.
The quality: proven prestige
A Vi de Finca must be a benchmark of quality in its DO, having been on the market for a minimum of 10 years enjoying consolidated international recognition and prestige. A good harvest is not enough; historical consistency is required.
In short: A Vi de Finca is the liquid photograph of a specific landscape. It is a wine that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, because it is linked exclusively to the microclimate, soil, and environment of that exact plot.
Vi de Finca vs. Vino de Pago
When our customers look for wines of the highest exclusivity based on a unique terroir, the same question often arises: Is a Catalan Vi de Finca the same as a Vino de Pago? The answer is a resounding “no”, although they share the same underlying philosophy: defending the identity of a singular plot over large volume productions.
- Vino de Pago: This is a category recognized by Spanish wine law. In practice, a Pago works almost as a Denomination of Origin in itself. This means that the estate, the Pago, has such a particular microclimate and soil that it completely sets itself apart from the DO of its geographical area, governing itself by its own private regulatory council rules.
- Vi de Finca: This is the highest distinction awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya through INCAVI, but with a crucial difference: it sits within and at the pinnacle of the Denomination of Origin itself. The perfect example is the Collbaix winery: it remains part of the DO Pla de Bages, but its Singular Negre goes one step further and achieves this recognition that elevates and demands standards much stricter than those of the local DO itself.
In a nutshell for the consumer: The Vino de Pago becomes independent of its region; in contrast, the Vi de Finca acts as the “Grand Cru” of its own Denomination of Origin, bringing prestige to the territory and proving that, within that DO, there is a plot that borders on absolute perfection.
Could a “Vino de Pago” ever exist in Catalonia?
The short answer is: yes.
If a winery managed to prove that its terroir meets state exclusivity requirements, Spanish and European law would protect it. Therefore, we could see a “Vino de Pago” geographically located in Catalonia, but legally completely disconnected from the Catalan Denominations of Origin system. So far, no Catalan winery has wanted to take this step due to the strong territorial roots and the great prestige that our DOs possess on their own, preferring to strive for the recognition of Vi de Finca Qualificada.
But how many wines have ever achieved this distinction in Catalonia? The answer will surprise you.
How Many Vins de Finca Exist in Catalonia?
As expected, the star question for fine wine lovers is knowing exactly the scope of this very select club. How many Vins de Finca actually exist in Catalonia? In 2026, the official list features twenty-four references that have achieved the classification of Vi de Finca Qualificada. We are talking about a tiny percentage if we consider the thousands of brands produced in our territory, which confirms the almost heroic demand of this certification.
This enological elite is not distributed uniformly but is concentrated in those territories where the combination of soil, climate, and history is most pronounced:
- DO Penedès, the indisputable totem (10 Vins de Finca): Contrary to what many think, Penedès leads the Catalan ranking of exclusivity. The legacy of the Can Bas winery stands out overwhelmingly, boasting four certified references (La Capella, La Creu, La Romana, and Monreal). The map of the region is completed with icons of viticulture and great aging wines such as Finca Avi Ton (Eudald Massana Noya), the highly acclaimed Vinya La Scala, Vinya Palau, Vinya Le Havre, and Vinya Gigi (by Jean Leon), and Raïms de la Immortalitat (Torre de Veguer).
- DOQ Priorat, the historic cradle: As expected, the Priorat region shines with iconic jewels like Clos Mogador (the absolute pioneer in Catalonia), followed by cult references such as Mas de la Rosa, Clos Fontà, and Coma Blanca. They are a reflection of the llicorella soil and the steep terrain.
- The revolution of DO Pla de Bages: Right here, Bages has consolidated itself as one of the great totems of this high-end category. Abadal stands out with its highly recognized Finca 3.9, and Heretat Oller del Mas led the way with the elegance of Arnau Oller, accompanied by the uniqueness of Especial Picapoll Negre. But without a doubt, the milestone that has redefined the region was the addition, in December 2025, of Singular Negre from the Collbaix winery, which along with its brother Singular Blanc are true masterpieces of organic viticulture that have boosted consumer interest in Bages’ identity.
- Other Finca oases in Catalonia: The exclusivity map is completed by brave projects spread across other Denominations of Origin, such as Teixar and Totes les Tallades in DO Montsant, V d’O 2 in DO Empordà, and the Vi de Finca Edetària and Singular Blanc d’Herència Altés from DO Terra Alta.
Three Vins de Finca from Pla de Bages You Must Taste at Least Once in Your Life
From Wonderful Wines, we wholeheartedly invite you to explore and taste every single wine from this denomination of origin, whether officially recognized as finca wines or not, because all of them beat with the pure character of our land. But today we must perform an exercise of extreme precision and choose.
We have to take a stand and select those bottles that, due to their exclusivity, history, or heroic recognition, have become true totems. If we had to choose the three Vins de Finca from Pla de Bages that you must taste at least once in your life, they would undoubtedly be these three treasures.
Arnau Oller from Heretat Oller del Mas

The first of them is Arnau Oller, crafted by the Oller del Mas winery, a wine that holds the title of being the absolute pioneer in the region to achieve the prestigious official Vi de Finca Qualificada certification. This organic red wine is born at the foot of a 10th-century castle, in a unique plot of loamy-clay soils where Merlot and Picapoll Negre varieties intertwine to offer a stately elegance.
When poured, it catches the eye with its deep and brilliant garnet color, which opens the way to an incredibly rich aromatic symphony on the nose. It unfolds leisurely, initially showing ripe red fruit and wild strawberries, which are quickly enriched by notes of sweet spices, a touch of black pepper, and a seamlessly integrated background of noble wood. On the palate, it is pure seduction; the entry is velvety and noble, giving way to a broad and structured journey, sustained by round tannins and a magnificent balsamic freshness that extends into a mineral and forest-floor aftertaste.
For a groundbreaking pairing, we suggest combining it with low-temperature confit artichokes topped with shaves of fresh pan-seared foie gras and a subtle fig reduction. The structure and balsamic acidity of Arnau Oller cut through the richness of the foie gras sublimely, while the wine’s spicy background embraces and elevates the artichoke’s complex vegetable notes.
Singular Negre from the Collbaix winery

The second treasure is Singular Negre from the Collbaix winery, which became the territory’s latest grand champion after achieving its official Vi de Finca classification last December 2025. This is a high-mountain red wine absolutely tied to the surroundings of the Collbaix hill, where Cabernet Sauvignon vines fight heroically against limestone rock and the harshness of the continental climate.
In the glass, it impacts with a high depth and a dark ruby color with intense purple reflections. On the nose, it is a truly captivating explosion of black fruits, such as blackberries and ripe plums, which blend fascinatingly with mineral nuances of flint, memories of wet earth, and small strokes of pure cocoa from its careful aging. In the mouth, it transforms into a highly emotional experience; it enters with imposing power but moves with an extraordinarily silky texture, filling the palate with superb volume and a vibrant acidity that provides enviable freshness leading to a highly persistent and deep finish.
Its perfect groundbreaking pairing is a wild bluefin tuna tataki with a toasted sesame crust and a citrus ponzu sauce reduction. The healthy fat and ferrous character of the oily fish find their ideal balance in the wine’s volume and mineral background, making the freshness of this Singular Negre blend magically with the saline and citrus contrast of Asian cuisine.
Finca 3.9 from the Abadal winery

Finally, the third jewel is the 3.9 from the Abadal winery. This is, without a doubt, the wine that put DO Pla de Bages on the map, acclaimed by all for its indisputable terroir character; it is worth noting that it is born from a meticulous selection of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah plots planted on red clay soils surrounded by a unique woodland environment.
Visually, it stands out with an intense cherry-red color with an elegant garnet rim. On the nose, it offers a complex and highly identifying aromatic expression of Bages, highlighting memories of black fruit in liqueur intertwined with notes of liquorice, mint balsamics, and a marked background of Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme. On the palate, it shows a powerful, fleshy entry full of personality; it is a full-bodied wine but endowed with mature tannins that provide a broad, balsamic, and extremely long passage that leaves an elegant and fruity memory.
For this wine, the ideal groundbreaking pairing is a oxtail cannelloni infused with high-percentage dark chocolate and autumn truffle. The flavor intensity and melt-in-the-mouth texture of the oxtail are perfectly framed by the wine’s fleshiness, while the forest-floor touches of the truffle and the elegant bitterness of the dark chocolate fuse with the liquorice nuances and mature tannins of the Abadal 3.9, creating a memorable finish.
The Vi de Finca, Much More Than a Label
The next time you see a Vi de Finca Qualificada, remember that it is not a marketing whim or a passing trend. It is the culmination of years of silent work, absolute respect for a specific terroir, and a demand that most wineries will never dare to assume. Every bottle bearing this seal is, in essence, an unrepeatable geological and human document.
What makes DO Pla de Bages so special in this context is that, in a relatively small and until recently not very high-profile territory, five Vins de Finca Qualificada have emerged to compete head-to-head with the great references of Priorat or Penedès. This is no accident; it is the direct consequence of a region with a very strong character of its own and winegrowers who have decided to bet on identity ahead of volume.
At Wonderful Wines, we wanted to be among the first to explain it to you, because we believe that, as wine lovers, you deserve to know the true value of what is in your glass. If you have made it this far, you already have everything you need to choose wisely and enjoy mindfully.
Now, all that’s left is to open the bottle.
