Every morning on the way to open the store in Manresa, and every evening when we pull the shutter down after a hard day’s work, there is one image that never fails. An imposing silhouette, carved against the sky, that accompanies us in our daily routine and reminds us where we come from: the majestic Montserrat mountain.

For us in Bages, Montserrat is much more than an iconic landscape or cultural landmark; it is a magical shield shaping our continental climate, the soil we walk on, and the steadfast character of our beloved DO Pla de Bages wines.
Yet, we often stop to look at those vertical rock walls and ask ourselves the same question: what lies just on the other side of the mountain?
Right where the rock begins to soften towards the south and the view opens up seeking the Mediterranean light, we find our brothers of DO Penedès. A land of ancient vineyards that shares Montserrat’s protective shadow with us, yet breathes a very different sea breeze. A vibrant region where Xarel·lo reigns supreme, and where the tradition of historic country estates weaves together with a new generation of winemakers doing truly fascinating work.
Today we cross the mountain—if only through the glass—to discover how Montserrat’s influence and Mediterranean character make these wines the ultimate companions for summer terraces.
Montserrat, the invisible shield and the secret to summer whites
If you have ever strolled through the Alt Penedès vineyards in mid-July, you will have noticed the climate’s special duality. By day, the Mediterranean sun warms the calcareous soils rich in ancient marine fossils, filling the fruit with nuanced flavors and allowing a slow ripening process. But as evening falls and the sun dips behind the peaks of Montserrat, the mountain acts as a genuine thermal shield.
This wall of stone blocks the colder northern winds while drawing cool, refreshing mountain air down across the vines at night. This day-to-night temperature contrast is the key. It is the reason grape varieties like Xarel·lo, Malvasía de Sitges, or international ones like Chardonnay manage to retain a vibrant, electric acidity, keeping the wine lively rather than heavy under the summer heat.
On a seaside terrace or a cool inland patio, opening a Penedès white born in the view of Montserrat brings that fresh breeze right to your table. These are wines that call for the outdoors, condensation dripping down chilled glasses, and unhurried conversations—capturing the essence of a landscape that unites mountain power with maritime light and salinity.
The magic of Montserrat: when still wine turns into bubbles
Penedès is not a uniform landscape; it is a complex mosaic of microclimates. In the Upper Penedès, at the foot of Montserrat reaching heights of nearly 800 meters, the vines breathe mountain air, preserving electric acidity. Descending into the Central Penedès, clay-limestone hills become the realm of Xarel·lo. And in the Maritime Penedès, coastal influence brings crisp salinity.
During our visits to Penedès, when we set off into this historic territory where families have worked the same land for generations, there is one moment that always gives us goosebumps. It is stepping into the quiet gloom of the cellar, bottle in hand, to hear about the transformation of grape must into still wine, and how that wine can then become a world-class sparkling wine.
The real magic happens in the cellar shadows. That same still wine—fresh, vibrant, and fruity—undergoes a second fermentation inside the bottle. Time, lees aging, and the patience of master winemakers yield high-quality sparkling wines under the DO Clàssic Penedès seal: the world’s first designation demanding that all sparkling wines be 100% organic, estate-bottled, and aged for a minimum of 15 months.
Our essential DO Penedès wines for summer evenings and nights
Malvasía de Sitges: the Mediterranean ritual of evening chats
There is one tradition that defines our Mediterranean character best: as late afternoon arrives and the heat breaks, heading out to the doorstep or terrace to catch up with friends and neighbors. It is the art of watching life slow down, laughing, and sharing stories as the breeze stirs the grapevines. And for this quintessential outdoor tardeo, one wine has become an indispensable companion: Malvasía de Sitges.
This historic variety has undergone a true reinventive renaissance at wineries like Ramon Canals. With their Onna Malva, they showcase how traditional vines can yield a dry, organic, and thoroughly modern white wine. Packed with aromatic orange blossom and white fruit notes balanced by crisp acidity and maritime salinity, it is a bottle you’ll always want on hand as dusk approaches.
Xarel·lo: the undisputed queen of Penedès
It is the native variety par excellence of Penedès, translating the rugged clay-limestone soils into the backbone, structure, and aging potential for both still whites and top sparkling wines of the region.
To experience pure, unadulterated Xarel·lo straight from the terroir, look no further than winery Credo (the still wine project from the Recaredo family) and their iconic Miranius.
This 100% Xarel·lo crafted through organic and biodynamic farming is the liquid definition of a Mediterranean white for outdoor dining: full of nerve, bright acidity, and minerality born directly from vineyard stones.
Miranius skips the frills and delivers honest, crisp, deeply gastronomic drinking. It complements summer dinners that start as the sun sets and tables fill with shared plates, bringing clarity and elegance to grilled vegetables, fresh fish, or seafood rice dishes.
Chardonnay: Mediterranean calm
While Malvasía sparks the late afternoon and Xarel·lo frames the main meal, Chardonnay takes center stage for long, relaxed conversations that stretch past the main courses.
Despite its international origin, Chardonnay has found an ideal microclimate in Penedès to express rich creaminess without losing a hint of freshness.
A stellar example is Gran Clot dels Oms Chardonnay from Finca Ca N’Estella. Aged on its lees for enhanced body and silky texture, it proves how expressive, food-friendly, and versatile this grape can be.
And yes, we are going to do something very French: bring cheese to dessert. There is no better way to cap a summer evening than savoring a final glass of Chardonnay alongside a curated cheese board as the conversation continues into the night.
The magic of conversion: when still wine becomes sparkling to close the night
When night settles in completely, glasses empty, and the gathering promises to go on until dawn, it’s time to come full circle. Watching still wines quietly transform in the subterranean Penedès cellars into extraordinary sparkling wines through time and patience feels almost magical.
To put a gold seal on the night, our top pick is Colet Tradicional Extra Brut from the Colet winery. Crafted under DO Clàssic Penedès guidelines using a traditional blend (Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada), this sparkling wine exudes pure Mediterranean character.
Its fine bubbles and integrated acidity cleanse the palate with electric freshness, reigniting conversation just when you thought everything had been said.
A final toast uniting the land, our winegrowers’ hard work, and the joy of sharing great moments around the table.
Thank you, Penedès: the summer road in your glass
From the exuberant aromas of Malvasía de Sitges in the late afternoon to the unhurried structure of a late-night Chardonnay, or the lively ritual of a Clàssic Penedès sparkler to toast the end of the night: this trip through our neighboring region reminds us that summer isn’t measured in days, but in the quality of conversations we share around a table.

From Central Catalonia, we send our gratitude to our friends on the other side of Montserrat: to the winegrowers caring for every vine under the sun, the family wineries keeping tradition alive, and everyone who makes these unforgettable summer nights possible year after year.
At Wonderful Wines, we are lucky to bring a piece of this magic directly to your terrace.
Cheers, good wine, and happy summer!
